Navigate the Matrix

Users can access any area, event block, comment or diamond on the Matrix with the Navigation tools provided.

To change the part of a Matrix displayed on the screen:

Use Cursor tool for small moves

The cursor can be used to move the active matrix.

  1. Point the cursor to any unoccupied area in the current window
  2. drag the window over the desired area of the Matrix.
The blue outline in the Jump Map window (if open) shows the section of the Matrix being displayed.

NOTE: The larger the matrix, the longer it takes for the window to move. Very large and complex Matrices may take 1-2 seconds to complete the move.

Use arrow keys

Arrow keys will also move the active matrix.

  1. Press arrow keys to move matrix up, down, left or right approximately 1/5th of an EB.

  2. Press Command+arrow key to move Matrix one screen width or height.

Use Scroll bars - Faster

Use scroll bars to position the window over the desired area of the Matrix.

Use Jump map - Fastest

The Jump Map is a miniature view of the Matrix.

To position the Jump Map on the screen, use View>Jump Map Display, and select Display on Matrix, Display in Window or Do Not Display.

  1. Point cursor to the area of the Matrix to be viewed,
  2. click on that area,
  3. That area will appear in the current window.
  4. The blue outline on the Jump Map shows what section of the Matrix is being displayed.

To quickly find a specific EB, Comment or Diamond anywhere on a Matrix:


Use EB Panel

The EB Panel is a table displaying the contents of EBs in the file.

  1. Use Command+k or Window> EB Panel to open the EB Panel.
  2. Position the panel by dragging the title bar at least 1' below the Time Bar
  3. Select the sort column to order the list
  4. Scan the list to find the desired EB,
  5. Click on the actor column in that row and the EB will appear at the top of the Matrix.
  6. The EB can be selected for subsequent tasks.

Use Comment Panel

The Comment Panel is a table displaying the contents of all Comments in the file.

  1. Use Command+r or Window > Comment Panel to open the Comment Panel.
  2. Position the panel by dragging the tile bar at least 1' below the Time Bar
  3. Scan the list to find the desired Comment,
  4. Click on the Comment and it will appear at the top left corner of the Matrix.
  5. The Comment can be selected for the subsequent tasks.

Use Diamond Panel

The Diamond Panel is a branched table showing all the entries for the Diamonds in the file.

  1. Use Command+l or Window > Diamond Panel to open the Diamond Panel.
  2. Position the panel by dragging the tile bar at least 1' below the Time Bar
  3. Scan the list to find the desired Diamond.
  4. Click on the Diamond number column in that row and the Diamond will appear at the top of the Matrix. The Diamond can be selected for the subsequent tasks.

Jump Map

Use the Jump Map to go to the area near where the EB, comment or diamond is believed to be located, using trial and error.


To Increase the number of EBs displayed on the screen:
Use ZOOM
tool

The Zoom Tool enlarges or shrinks the size of the EBs displayed in a Matrix.

  1. Use View > Zoom Out or Command- to reduce the size of the EBs displayed (display more EBs) on the screen in small increments, up to approximately 50% of normal size.
  2. TO restore to normal size display, use View > Zoom in or Command+.
  3. The zoomed Matrix will print in the size displayed.
NOTE: Grayed zoom commands in the View menu indicate zoom capability has reached its limit.
Reduce EB content

Alternatively, to show more EBs reduce the content in each EB with the Preferences panel.

  1. Use Catalyst>Preferences>Matrix Display tab
  2. Uncheck one or more of the check boxes.
  3. the height of every EB will be reduced as the number of elements displayed is reduced.

View a vertical "slice" of the Matrix

Sometimes on large Matrices, it is helpful to work on a small section or "slice" of the Matrix. Investigation Catalyst provides for viewing a vertical section of the Matrix showing only EBs inside a specified date and time range.

To set a slice with Filter:
Use Tools > Date Range Filter or Command+Option+F to open Date Range Panel


  1. Enter Start After date/time in form yyyy:mm:dd and hh:mm:ss:000. (The display will start with the next EB after the date and time you enter.)
  2. Enter End Before date/time in same format. (The display will end with the EB before the date and time you enter.)
  3. Close panel
  4. Matrix will display only EBs within the range specified.
Use Time Bar

Alternatively, enter Begin after and End Before date/time. by clicking the dates on the Time Bar.

  1. place cursor in Start After Date space
  2. click on the desired Begin After date/time on the Timebar. The date/time values will appear in the spaces in that row
  3. tab the cursor to the next row, End Before Date space
  4. click on the desired End Before date/time. The date/time values will appear in the spaces in that row.
  5. Click on the close button to close the panel when finished.
To display full Matrix: Reopen Date Range Panel
  1. Click on Display All button
  2. close the Panel
  3. click on Snap EBs to Time icon in the Tool Bar to ensure the EBs are aligned properly.
  4. Close Panel
