REPORT QUALITY ASSURANCE TUTORIAL

Preparatory Step 4: Convert and document the implied actions in the Event Block format.

Because data exists in so many forms, converting any data in the EB format is a constant challenge for investigators. This step provides insights into how to handle these challenges.

For each implied or inferred event that you have found, define the actor and actions inferred. Record whatever notes you think you would make during an investigation.

NOTE: Remember, the goal is to identify and document Event Blocks (EBs).

Q 4-1. How should I convert and document inferred actions?
Convert the data into the name of the implied person or object or the implied action that the word or phrase suggests, using the EB format.

Q 4-2. What if I can't identify the actor or action from the words?
Use a ? in place of the name or action to show that you do not know the name or what the actor did, or - sometimes - both.

Q 4-3. How do I record the inferred actions?
This is a matter of personal preference. Once you get used to thinking this way, you will be able to go directly from marked up documents to INVESTIGATION CATALYST Matrixes. For this exercise, on paper documents, record the actions on your list of actions, under a subheading Inferred Actions, and link the actions to the key words in the document on which you based your inference. In computer files, record the actor name and act plus any descriptors - or question marks - in parentheses after the key words.
